USFWS Long Island Salt Marsh Restoration - Lido Beach National Wildlife Management Area - Lido Beach, NY
After Hurricane Sandy made landfall in the region in October of 2012, the USFWS removed nearly 60 tons of floatable debris from the marsh plain at the Lido Beach National Wildlife Management Area in Lido Beach, New York. As part of Hurricane Sandy Resiliency Project #1, AKRF, under the direction of Mr. Shotzberger, prepared a restoration design that involved the application of herbicide to invasive Phragmites, the installation of a hybrid living shoreline/rock tombolo structure along Reynold’s Channel, and the hand excavation of drainage runnels to relieve waterlogged marsh plain impaired by legacy grid ditches. Construction was completed in the fall of 2018, and planting was completed in the spring of 2019.
