NYSDOT - Tappan Zee Bridge Replacement – Gay’s Point Channel Restoration - Newton Hook, NY
As one of several permit requirements for the replacement of the Tappan Zee Bridge in New York, NYSDOT was required to restore a degraded back channel on the Hudson River to improve flow, reduce invasive water chestnut (Trapa natans), and to enhance finfish habitat. The degraded/filled Gay’s Point channel was selected for restoration in 2014. Mr. Shotzberger led AKRF efforts to collect baseline vegetative mapping data, design the back channel floodplain wetlands, and to collect post-construction finfish data using Delmarva Aquatics’ electrofishing equipment. The site’s earthmoving operations were completed in 2017, and the mitigation project is currently being monitored for biological success.
